Fire Marshal's Office
Bureau of Fire Prevention

The Bureau of Fire prevention is responsible for the enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code in all commercial, industrial and multiple occupancy dwellings within Deptford Township. The Bureau is also responsible for all Fire Prevention Education and the investigation of all reported fires and explosions that occur within the township. The office is also the central point for the collection and distribution of all incident, casualty, and investigation reports generated.

The Bureau of Fire prevention is under the supervision of the Fire Marshal. Currently all inspections within the township are performed by the Fire Marshals office and the Balance are done by the qualified career staff. Many of our members also maintain a fire inspector certification. By knowing what is in the NJ Uniform Fire Code, all personnel, both career and volunteer, are able to help educate the public about fire prevention matters. For the investigation of fires and complaints, personnel from the Bureau of Fire Prevention are on call 24 hours a day on a rotating duty schedule. We currently have 10 career members trained to do fire investigations.

For over 23 years, Robert A Burkhardt, Jr has served his community as a firefighter with the Deptford Fire Department. Starting as a Junior Member with the Union Fire Company of Blackwood Terrace, Robert moved through the ranks to become a career firefighter in 1996. While serving as a career firefighter, he worked at all the township fire stations which improved his knowledge of the town. As Robert continued his fire service education, he became more involved with the inspection process and investigation of fire.

In August of 2004, he was assigned to the Bureau of Fire Prevention where he currently serves as Fire Marshal / Captain for the Township. Robert is a New Jersey Level II Fire Instructor and spends many hours instructing new recruits as the Gloucester County Fire Academy.

When his isn’t inspecting, investigating or fighting fire, he enjoys spending time with his family. He enjoys camping, fishing and hunting with his family. He currently is certified as a New Jersey Fish & Game Wildlife Instructor. He loves volunteering his time to teach the young kids the proper techniques of firearms and safety of hunting. Robert believes that the only way to change the future is to invest time in the children.

Robert, his wife Nicole and his son Bobby, reside in the Almonesson section of Deptford.
